Class of 2009 should all have a .5 credit for School to Career ENGLISH English 9: Literature and Composition 9th grade Course length: 1 year Students will improve their literacy skills through a study of a variety of literature selections and composition. The majority of literature that is covered in this course was written after WWI. Students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences and will continue to develop knowledge of vocabulary and grammar to enhance both their writing and reading skills. Explanatory or expository writing will be the main focus of writing in this course. This course is mandatory for all 9th grade students. 1 Credit English 10: American Literature and Composition 10th grade Course length: 1 year Students will improve their literacy skills through a study of American Literature and composition. Students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences and will continue to develop knowledge of vocabulary and grammar to enhance both their writing and reading skills. This course is mandatory for all 10th grade students. 1 Credit English 11: World Literature and Composition 11th grade Course length: 1 year Students will improve their literacy skills through a study of World Literature and composition. Students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences and will continue to develop knowledge of vocabulary and grammar to enhance both their writing and reading skills. Persuasive writing will be the predominate focus of writing in this course. 1 Credit English 12: British Literature and Composition 12th grade Course length: 1 year Students will improve their literacy skills through a study of British Literature and composition. Students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences and will continue to develop knowledge of vocabulary and grammar to enhance both their writing and reading skills. 1 Credit College Composition (ENG 121 and ENG 122) 11th, 12th grade- Course length: 1 year Dual Credit--CNCC credit: 3 credit hours per semester Students will develop advanced writing techniques, focusing on college-level practices and expectations. Students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences to further develop communication skills. Students may earn dual credit upon successful completion of this course. This is a guaranteed transfer course following the guidelines of the Colorado Community College System. College British Literature (LIT 221 and LIT 222) Course Length: 1 Year Dual Credit—CNCC Credit: 3 credit hours per semester This course provides an overview of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the present. It explores ideas, historical and social contexts, themes and literary characteristics of works in various genres by major writers. Students may earn dual credit upon successful completion of this course. This is a guaranteed transfer course following the guidelines of the Colorado Community College System. Speech 10th grade Course length: 1 semester Students will practice both listening and speaking skills. They will speak in front of the class and learn to research, outline, and present speeches to gain presentation experience and organizational skills. Students will learn to use the power point program to enhance their presentations and have more exposure to modern technology. They will complete a number of different types of speeches: instructional, explanatory, story interpretation, compare and contrast, persuasion, and debates. .5 Credit MATH Integrated Algebra 9, 10, grade Course Length: 1 year The Algebra topics covered include graphing and solving linear equations, inequalities with word problems, proportions, system of equations using multiple representations of words, tables, rules, graphs, and solving and graphing quadratic equations including solving by factoring and the quadratic formula. 1 Credit Intermediate Algebra 9, 10, 11 grade Prerequisite: Integrated Algebra Course Length: 1 year Intermediate Algebra continues on from Integrated Algebra. It is a bridge class between Algebra and Geometry. It will work on building Algebra skills and start working on Geometry skills. It will go more into the Algebra and get students ready for Geometry. It will hit the skills that the students from Algebra did not master yet and help them prepare for their future in mathematics at the high school level. The Algebra topics covered include graphing and solving linear equations, inequalities with word problems, proportions, system of equations using multiple representations of words, tables, rules, graphs, and solving and graphing quadratic equations including solving by factoring and the quadratic formula. 1 Credit Integrated Geometry 9,10, 11, 12 grade Prerequisite: Integrated Algebra and/or Intermediate Algebra Course Length: 1 year The Geometry topics that will be covered will be the study of geometric shapes (both planar and three dimensional) – their relationships and properties, areas and volumes. Students will study geometric proofs, trigonometry, and review Integrated Algebra topics. 1 Credit Integrated Algebra II 10, 11, 12 grade Prerequisite: Integrated Algebra and Integrated Geometry Course Length: 1 year Integrated Algebra II starts with a continuation of concepts studied in Integrated Algebra. Students will be challenged by new concepts that require graphing skill, function analysis, solving higher order equations, investigating complex number systems, and working with matrices, trigonometry, rational expressions and conic sections. 1 Credit Thinking Mathematics 11, 12th grade Prerequisite: Integrated Algebra, Integrated Geometry, and Integrated Algebra II Course Length: 1 year Thinking Mathematics continues on from Integrated Algebra II. Students will work on building Algebra II skills and get ready for college math classes. Thinking Mathematics will focus on trigonometry. They will get an introduction into trigonometry and start to get into some of the properties. This class was made to prepare students for college math classes. 1 Credit College Pre-Calculus 11, 12th grade Prerequisite: Integrated Algebra, Integrated Geometry, and Integrated AlgebraII. Course Length: 1 year CNCC Credit 5 College Credits Pre-calculus is a review of algebra and trigonometry. Topics include algebraic manipulations, properties of algebraic and trigonometric functions and their graphs and equations, logarithms, sequences, series and probability. Prerequisites for Admission: To be admitted to the course, a student must have received a C or better in all previous Math courses, and the student must have achieved or surpassed the following scores: ACT Math -20 and ACT Reading-17; or PLAN Reading-18 and PLAN Math -21 1 Credit HS College Calculus 12th grade Prerequisites: Integrated Algebra, Integrated Geometry, Integrated Algebra II, and College Pre-Calculus Course Length: 1 year CNCC Credit 5 college credits A beginning college calculus course studying limits, derivatives and antiderivatives, and integrals (definite and indefinite), and the calculus of exponential and logarithmic functions. Prerequisites for Admission: To be admitted to the course, a student must have received a C or better in all previous Math courses, and the student must have achieved or surpassed the following scores: ACT Math -20 and ACT Reading-17; or PLAN Reading-18 and PLAN Math -21 1 Credit HS SCIENCE Physical Science 9th Grade Course length: 1 year This course introduces the general principles of Physics in combination with Astronomy, and Earth science. Topics include measurement, motion, Newton's laws of motion, momentum, energy, work, power, heat, thermodynamics, waves, sound light, electricity, magnetism, and scientific thought. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the physical environment and be able to apply the scientific principles to observations experienced. The class will provide a variety of learning activities including, lecture, videos, and notes. Primary topics of astronomy will include the solar system, stars, and the universe. While exploring Earth Science we will explore plate tectonics, meteorology, the atmosphere and natural disasters. 1 Credit Biology 10th Grade Course length: 1 year Prerequisite: Physical Science This class is designed as a comprehensive course in the fundamentals of the biological sciences. The course will include units covering key areas including the molecular basis of living processes, unicellular through complex multi cellular life forms, genetics, heredity, evolution, and ecology. The course will include regular laboratory sessions to examine these principles in real life situations. 1 Credit Honors Biology 10th Grade Course Length: 1 Year Prerequisite: Physical Science (Students must have obtained a grade of “A” or B” in Physical Science and must apply for admission to the Honors Course) This course is designed as a comprehensive course covering the same fundamental concepts of the biological sciences. These concepts will include the chemical and molecular basis of living organisms and systems, unicellular through multi cellular life forms, genetics, heredity, evolution and ecology. The Honors students will cover this material in considerably more depth and at a more rapid pace than the 10th grade Biology class. The course will also include more in depth and complex laboratory activities including several biotechnology based exercises, and will be expected to prepare lesson plans and make several biology presentations to middle school and elementary school classrooms. 1 Credit Health 10th Grade Course Length: 1 Semester This course will focus on health issues facing many teens. The course will be divided into 3 main sections. The sections covered will look at: Food and Nutrition: Healthy Eating, Body Image, Healthy Choice, Eating Disorders, Depression Cycle etc. Sexual Health: Healthy Relationships, Human Sexuality, Anatomy/Physiology, STDs, Pregnancy Drugs: The effects of commonly abused drugs, Addictiveness, Tollerance, Societal Issues, etc. The course will use lecture, class work, discussion and videos to present information on the above topics. .5 Credits Natural Resources 11th and 12th Grade Pre-requisites: Physical Science and Biology Course Length: 1 year This course will study the basic scientific concepts at work behind natural resource based activities with the active assistance of local professionals involved in the natural resource business. For example, students in past course offerings have completed projects in forest fire management, elk herd management and behavior, taxidermy, trout management, whirling disease, mined land reclamation, the science behind scuba diving (including certification)and a host of others. This course includes significant laboratory and field experiences and will be structured around the availability of local experts and the specific interests of the students registered in the class. 1 Credit Physics 11th and 12th Grade Pre-requisites: Physical Science and Biology Course Length: 1 year This is an introductory physics course, the applications and theory of basic physics principles are presented. Extensive problem-solving, laboratory investigation and applications are involved. Topics include measurement, force, statics, dynamics and motion, work, energy and power, machines, properties of solids and liquids, and the study of heat, the study of waves. This course will be heavily integrated with math and several formulas must be utilized for successful completion. 1 Credit College Biology (Biology 111), 11th, 12th Grade Course Length: 1 year CNCC credits 5 ($50.00 Lab Fee Required) Pre-requisites: Physical Science, Biology and/or Honors Biology This course examines the fundamental molecular, cellular and genetic principles which characterize plants and animals and their relationship to the environment. The course will include cell structure and function, the metabolic processes of respiration, photosynthesis, as well as cellular reproduction , the basic concepts of heredity, genetics and evolution and basic principles of ecology. This course includes significant laboratory exercises in each of the above subject areas. (This course is a college level course and is one of the Statewide Guaranteed Transfer courses offered through CNCC) Prerequisites for Admission: To be admitted to the course, a student must have received a C or better in all previous Science courses, and the student must have achieved or surpassed the following scores: ACT ENG -18 and ACT REA-17 ACT Science-20; or PLAN ENG-19 and PLAN REA -18; PLAN Science-21 1 Credit SOCIAL STUDIES U.S. History 9th Grade Course Length: 1 year This course covers the movement of people and our nation through time from the Civil War and Reconstruction 1850-1877, The West 1870-1890, Development of the Industrial U.S.1865-1914, the emergence of the U.S. As a world power 1890-1920, Progressive era - Imperialism, the 1920's prosperity and problems. Depression and New Deal 1930-1939, WWII/ Holocaust and Post War U.S. 1939-1961, Cold War / Korea, Civil Rights, Vietnam, Contemporary U.S. 1 Credit Geography 9th grade Course Length: 1 Semester This course will use the five themes of geography to investigate the physical and social aspects of the world’s regions. A global perspective is used to help students understand the connections among the world’s people and places and understand their own situations and their own futures. .5 Credit World History 10th Grade Course Length: 1 year This course covers the world in the 19th century to the present. The emergence of the modem unified nations in Europe, Age of Imperialism.WWI, Rise of dictatorships, WWII, Cold War, Contemporary world in transition. 1 Credit Civics 11th grade Course Length: 1 Semester Pre-requisites: World and US History All students will be future members of a democracy that can only exist with citizen participation. A strong foundation in the principles of American civics, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, is necessary to produce informed citizens capable of making responsible decisions and voting. A knowledge of the rules, rights and responsibilities of citizens helps to create a common political culture that furthers American ideals of democracy and equality. 1 Credit Business Economics 11th grade Course Length: 1 Semester Pre-requisites: World and US History This course introduces the basic concepts of macro and micro economics by focusing on how people and governments use scarce resources to satisfy individual needs and wants. The concept of supply and demand will be a major focus in this course. Students will also have the opportunity to compete with one another in a fantasy stock market game. The various aspects of the financial markets and investing in general will also be explored in detail. .5 Credits PHYSICAL EDUCATION Challenge PE 9,10,11,12th Grades Course Length: Year long This course is designed to teach students various team and individual sports and activities. Included will be historical facts, rules, and basic skills to participate in these activities. This course is conducted at a lower intensity level but still gives adequate physical activity. 1 Credit Weight Training 10,11,12 grade Prerequisite: Tiger PE Course Length: Year long This course is designed to introduce students to a general athletic conditioning program. Emphasis will be place on proper lifting techniques, running technique, stretching, goal setting, and teamwork. The goal of the class is to improve student’s muscular strength, speed, explosive power, and agility through weight training, polymeric exercises, and speed and agility drills. The BFS training program will be the program followed for this class. 1 Credit Advanced Weights 10,11,12 grade Prerequisite: Tiger PE Course Length: Year long This course is designed for the student-athlete to reach their maximum potential. Emphasis will be placed on sport specific training programs along with advanced lifting techniques. Included will be strength training, polymeric exercises, speed development, agility drills, goal setting, leadership skills, and teamwork. The BFS training program will be the program followed for this class. 1 Credit Tiger PE 9th Grade Course Length: Year Long This class is designed to teach students various team and individual sports and activities. Included will be historical facts, rules, and basic skills to participate in these activities. 1 Credit FINE ARTS Hayden High School Band 9,10,11,12th grades Instructor Approval Year long Course Students enrolled in high school band will continue to develop instrumental techniques, basic music theory and history, sight-reading techniques and performance skills. In addition to daily rehearsals, students will get the opportunity to audition for honor bands, honor festivals, All-State groups as well as participating in Pep Band events and attend and participate in various performances in and around the community. Student will also have the opportunity to perform in small and large group festivals. Lessons and master classes will be available to all students. The majority of performances are mandatory and members are eligible to participate in an end-of-the-year trip. Scale and etude quizzes will be given periodically for assessment purposes. 1 Credit Hayden High School Jazz Ensemble 9,10,11,12th Grade Instructor Approval Year long Course Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz including salsa, blues, swing, Dixie land, funk and fusion. In addition to daily rehearsals students will have several opportunities to perform in and around the community as well as at Jazz Festivals. Students will also have the opportunity to audition of honor jazz bands and All-State jazz band. Instrumentation is based on interest and ability. Percussion, Guitar, Piano, Saxophone, Trombone, and Trumpet players are encouraged to sign up, however instructor permission is required. Scale and etude quizzes will be given periodically for assessment purposes and the majority of performances are required. 1 Credit 2-D Arts Section I and Section II 9, 10, 11, 12 grades No prerequisites Course Length: 1 year Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking Learn the skills you need to translate your visions and ideas into artistic form. Improve your drawing, painting, and printmaking skills and explore other 2-dimensional art mediums in this hands-on class. Creative problem solving, self-expression, artistic concepts, and technique development will be applied to a variety of artistic creations. Great for beginning through more experienced students as instruction and assignments are designed to grow each student from their unique level of knowledge and ability. 1 Credit 3-D Arts Section I and Section II 9, 10, 11, 12 grades No prerequisites Course Length: 1 year Ceramics and Sculpture This is a great class for those who like to create with their hands. Hand-built and wheelthrown clay work will make up about half the year with a variety of sculptural processes such as making mobiles, carving, modeling, assembling, and working with fiber arts filling the rest of the year. Great for beginning through more experienced students, as instruction and assignments are designed to grow each student from their unique level of knowledge and ability. 1 Credit 2-D Design, ART 131 Dual Enrollment 11, 12 grades 1 Semester, First semester only, 3 College Credits Textbook required Student Pays for own book This course examines the basic elements and principles of design, visual perception, and artistic form and composition as they relate to two-dimensional media. Students in this class will apply these concepts through hands-on exercises and assignments in a variety of media, analyze and evaluate visual designs and information, and develop creative problem-solving strategies. *This course is strongly recommended for any student interested in graphic design 2nd semester. Prerequisites for Admission: To be admitted into this course, a student must have achieved or surpassed the following scores: ACT Reading-17 and ACT English-18; or PLAN Reading-18 and PLAN English-19. .5 Credit HS Art Appreciation, ART 110 Dual Enrollment 11, 12 grades 1 Semester, 2nd Semester only, 3 College Credits Textbook required Student pays for own book Introduces the cultural significance of the visual arts including media, processes, techniques, traditions, and terminology. It promotes appreciation through understanding of art and involves a variety of experiences such as written and oral critique, hands-on exercises, media exploration, and group discussion. Prerequisites for Admission: To be admitted into this course, a student must have achieved or surpassed the following scores: ACT Reading-17 and ACT English-18; or PLAN Reading-18 and PLAN English-19. .5 Credit HS FOREIGN LANGUAGE SPANISH I 9,10,11,12 grade Course Length: 1 year No prerequisites This class is an introduction to Spanish. Students learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language including the introductions, the alphabet, the calendar, numbers, how to express likes and dislikes, clothing, time, school subjects, parts of the body, descriptive adjectives, and other vocabulary. They will learn basic Spanish grammar and sentence structure. Agreement and present tense conjugations are learned. Basic communication is emphasized in all four areas: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Spanish I is a college preparation class. Students must maintain a C average both semesters in order to advance to Spanish II. 1 Credit SPANISH II 10,11,12 grade Course Length: 1 year Prerequisite: Spanish I Students build on concepts learned in Spanish I. More topics are covered including weather, holidays, seasons, sports, places, school and city vocabulary, food and family. Grammar is learned a t a higher level including many irregular verbs, stem changing verbs, demonstrative and possessive adjectives. They will also learn the Preterit tense and the Future Informal.. More emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to communicate. Students will produce a weather report video. They will start reading the “Pobre Ana” series book 1 and 2. 1 Credit Spanish III 11, 12 grade Course Length: 1 year Prerequisite: Spanish II The focus of this class is the study of advanced Spanish grammar including reflexive verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns. New vocabulary will include , feelings, animals, health, holidays, chores, and travel. Reading will be practiced using the “Pobre Ana” series books 3,4 and 5.Students will develop their conversational skills. More cultural connections will be made. Students will have the opportunity to travel to a Spanish speaking country and learn about its culture. They will also watch cultural videos and write book reports. 1 Credit VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL CLASSES Welding 9,10,11,12 grade Course Length: 1 year No prerequisites This class involves the exploration of manufacturing and construction through the use of metallurgical (metal) product Emphasis includes. Arc, MIG, and Oxy-acetylene welding in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions. Plasma cuttii will also be explored. The completion of a project is required in this course. 1 Credit Advanced Welding 10,11,12 grade Course Length: 1 year Pre-requisites- Welding This class is a continuation of Welding 1. It explores basic certification testing and practicing. The emphasis is based on t American Welding Societies standards as well as advanced NIIG welding practices. Basic TIG welding of mild and stainie steel will also be explored. The completion of a major project in this class is required. 1 Credit Auto Body Collision and Refinishing 9,10,11,12th grades Course Length: 1 year No Pre-requisites In this course students will explore auto body repair and painting. Students will totally rebuild automobile bodies to original condition and better. Students will learn basic sheet metal work, sanding, dent pulling, welding, painting flames, painting with acrylic paint, metallic paint and clear coating. Working on muscle cars and trucks along with modern automobiles is included because of their vast differences. 1 Credit Auto Body Collision and Refinishing 9,10,11,12th grades Course Length: 1 year No Pre-requisites In this course students will explore automobiles as well as their evolution. The emphasis is on auto repair, rebuilding motors, drive trains, brake systems, electraical systems, fuel systems, suspension systems and trouble shooting as well as shop safety. 1 Credit Diesel Mechanics Length: 1 year This course is designed to provide students with an introductory experience with the workings of diesel engines. 1 Credit College Welding 11,12 grade Course Length: 1 year Pre-Requisites – Welding There is a $150 fee associated with this class CNCC credit- This course offers students the exploration of advanced techniques in Arc, MIG, and TIG Welding operations. Advanced welding certification and aluminum welding with TIG and MIG processes will be investigated and perfected. The completion of a major project out of a non-ferrous metal (aluminum or stainless steel) is required in this course. 1 Credit HS Construction Trades 9,10,11,12th grades Course Length: 1 year No prerequisites Const. Tech. 1 will be an introduction course dealing with construction terminology, the proper use of power equipment, board drafting, reading basic drawings, and visiting job sites. Students will be required to participate in a group construction project that will be operated as a small business. The sale of the projects will aid in the funding of the class and its equipment. The class will be based on residential construction. 1 Credit Cabinet Making 9,10,11,12th grades Course Length: 1 year No prerequisites This course involves a hands-on practical training of the design and construction of cabinets and furniture. Students learn identifications, characteristics, uses and processes involving woods and woodworking. Proper care and safe use of machines and hand tools will be stressed. Instruction will keep pace with new technologies and new materials. Quality and craftsmanship will be emphasized. 1 Credit BUSINESS/TECHNOLOGY Computer Applications 9th grade Course length: 1 semester No prerequisites This is an introduction to computers course focusing primarily on Microsoft Office 2007 applications. Students will learn the basic features of Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Publisher and create various projects using this software. Students will also be introduced to basic web design and development and create their own personal website. .5 Credit Web Design 10,11,12th grades Course length: Year Long Prerequisites- Computer Applications This advanced computer course focuses on web design, development, and implementation. Students will learn and utilize Microsoft’s Expression Web 2008 to create dynamic websites that comply with current internet standards. Students will have a chance to create a number of their own web projects and also work with local businesses to create real E-business and E-commerce websites. The class will also contribute web design and content to the Hayden School District website. 1 Credit Marketing/Graphic Design 10,11,12th grades Course length: 1 semester (2nd Semester only) Prerequisites- Computer Applications This course explores the various functions of marketing. Students will create a marketing and public relations campaign for a new business or product and will work closely with other school programs and local businesses to create marketing materials that will be utilized by the school and local community. Students will learn and utilize Microsoft’s Expression Studio 2008 to design, manipulate, and create dynamic graphic design projects that will reinforce marketing concepts and provide exciting, fresh, and cutting edge advertisements and marketing materials to be used in various projects throughout the semester. .5 Credit Intro to Business 10,11,12th grades Course length: 1 semester (1st Semester only) Prerequisites- Computer Applications This business course provides an introduction to the basic functions of business. It includes a discussion of the business environment, forms of business ownership, business ethics, management, human resources and labor-management issues, cultural diversity, marketing, technology, and finance. Globalization and the changing world of business will be a primary focus. Students will read, The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman and discuss emerging business issues and global opportunities. .5 Credit Desktop Publishing/Yearbook 10,11,12th grades Course length: Year Long Prerequisites- Computer Applications/Instructor Approval and Max of 10 students This desktop publishing course will introduce students to various graphic design and layout applications including Microsoft Publisher 2007 and Adobe Photoshop CS2. Students will learn the aspects of design and layout as they apply to the Hayden High School Yearbook production and publication. Elements of digital photography and manipulation will also be explored and students will act as school photographers for various activities and athletic events throughout the year. 1 Credit OTHER ELECTIVES: Teacher’s Aide 11,12th grades Course length: 1 semester Prerequisites – Good Standing in all other Course Work Students will be responsible for helping building secretaries, teachers and staff with duties as assigned. Will learn photocopying procedures, answering phones, assisting elementary school teachers as needed. Student will need School Counselor’s permission to enroll in this class. We will have only the following aide positions open: 2-Middle School 2- High School Open number - Elementary School .5 Credit Colorado On-line Learning Lab 11,12th grades Course length: 1 semester Prerequisites – Must receive approval & sign Contract Various subjects will be taught via our online program. These classes are taught by a bonafide High School teacher, therefore the students will receive a letter grade per high adopted high school procedures. Some of the classes may be approved for dual enrollment. If a student is approved for dual enrollment they are responsible to pay the $150 dual enrollment fee. Hayden High School will pay the cost of online courses if the course is approved through the counseling office. If a student fails the course they will be obligated to reimburse the school the $200 enrollment fee. Students may also be required to purchase a textbook for some of these courses. The student must talk with the School Counselor first to receive permission to be in this class. .5 Credit Dual Enrollment information 11,12th grade Most college courses offered have rigorous admittance requirements. If a student does not meet these requirements they can request an appeals form in the counseling office. These forms will be reviewed by the faculty appeals board to determine entrance into the course in question. Students will be expected to purchase their own textbooks for courses. Yes – The Colorado Opportunity Fund (COF) was created by the Colorado Legislature to provide financial support for eligible students for higher education but you have to apply to get the stipend (worth $86 per credit in 2006-07). Funds are not income based - apply for the stipend before registering for classes at https://cof.collegeaccess. net/cofapp/ . How do I get started?
